Game Over?
Online games have taken the world by storm. There are millions of different kinds of games that do as much as let you create your own world, battle in real life scenarios, and play online with friends. There are many different ways to play these online games, like consoles, PCs, virtual reality headsets, and even on our smartphones. As an avid player of many games myself, I tend to stay up late mashing the buttons on my controllers or keyboard. Ever since the COVID-19 lockdown (because many people have much more time on their hands) I feel as though many more people tend to be playing video games later and later. If you are a ‘gamer’ as well, would you agree to this? As much as I think this is unneeded, should parents of younger children who are guilty of this be able to set a time limit for their kids? If not, why? Are younger children capable of knowing when to stop and limit themselves? Do you believe that too much screen time (video game playing) is hurting the development of children and young adults?

Hello, Madalyn,
ReplyDeleteI have found myself sleeping hours later than the night I did beforehand when playing a video game. This, of course, has to do with blue light emitted from screens, which keeps you awake by suppressing hormones that affect your sleep schedule. One approach to resolving this issue, is to refrain from using devices one to two hours before bed. If parents see the need to discipline their children by taking away their games so that they sleep at the right time for school, then I am all for it. Children may not see the importance in having an organized schedule that allows them to get lots of sleep until they get older. I believe children and young adults shouldn’t stay inside all day as going outside and getting some sun is good for both physical and mental health. Video games shouldn’t be harmful when going outside is included in one’s daily routine.
I also find myself sleeping later than usual due to video games. I think parents should be able to limit their child's time playing video games if they start to form a daily habit of going to bed as the sun rises. Some kids are responsible enough to know when they should probably stop to take some rest from playing video games, but others will play until they're on the verge of falling asleep at the keyboard or on the couch. I agree with the previous comment that children should integrate some sort of exercise outside to take a break from the screen and get their blood circulating again.
ReplyDeleteI find myself spending hours on video games when I really only intended to play for one hour or so. This also does involve the time I play when I should be sleeping. I think parents should be more watchful with younger children and make sure that they spend a good amount of time away from screens. Teens on the other hand, should be able to stop themselves to other things. I personally prefer to be outside with friends or family, but with quarantine I can't go out as much so I have found myself playing more than I normally would. Too much time on screens is a bad thing not only for younger children, but for everyone in general. I think everyone should find a balance of being outside or doing some thing that doesn't involve electronics and playing video games.
