Are Students Going to Take Online School Seriously?

During this pandemic, quarantine has definitely had a mental strain on most teens. Even when school was in session, many students didn’t follow through with the online classes schools have provided. But now, since most are used to quarantining, how is it going to affect them when school begins in the fall?
Being at home during the quarantine has definitely made an impact on how teens feel towards school. Since they are used to occupying themselves by doing as they please, going back to school requires a new form of discipline. Are students going back to school with a positive attitude, or are they dreading this inevitable situation? Personally, I think when school begins in the fall there could be an issue with students attending classes. Toward the end of last school year when students were first sent home, some classes provided an option to attend an online class. Although this opportunity was open to all students, it was intended for those who needed to raise their grades. But not many students took advantage of this situation even though they needed it, instead, they saw this as an opportunity to end the school year early. So what difference does it make with this upcoming school year? Although they are starting with new grades, are students going to care as much as they did in past years?
Once school starts in the fall, are you going to take school seriously? Do you think online school is going to be more difficult for students, rather than being in a classroom? What are some options teachers could involve in online learning to make school easier or students? If you could choose either going back to school during this pandemic or doing online classes, what would you choose?

  1. I believe that if we were actually going to attend school in person, students would go back with a positive attitude. Many students are bored of being home all day and a change, like going back, can provide a distraction for them. Most students, from what I have heard, do not like online school because they find it harder. Therefore, many do not look forward to starting the school year online. However, teachers, during this year, will be better prepared compared to last year which will allow them to teach students in a better way. Also, since assignments will actually affect grades, more students will participate.
I personally do not enjoy online school and also feel that in person learning is better. I would prefer going back to school than online learning, but because of the current situation, it is the opposite. I am going to take online school seriously because I know if I don’t it will not benefit me in any way. Lastly, online learning is more difficult because it does not seem as mandatory since we are at home.

    1. I completely agree with you Jennifer. Online school compared to in class learning seems harder, and I feel most are more productive working in a classroom environment. Personally, I am not looking forward to online learning but because my grades depend on it, I'll have to make the best of it.

  2. Online schooling is not necessarily more difficult than in person schooling, but it definitely requires a certain level of discipline that is often hard to maintain, especially among children. However, the reason behind it may be difficult to address because it varies from student to student. Being at home for so long has taken away some sense of reality and time; without physical attendance, some people may feel less motivated to keep up with their daily tasks because we attach the idea of school to a specific place. The abruptness of this situation has left no room for a gradual adjustment, and a lot of people can not adapt to these types of changes so quickly. For some, the supervision by some type of authority or schedule may be needed, because while they can be bothersome, these authorities likely lead us to make much more efficient use of our time than we may realize. Based on the experience with online schooling the previous semester, a lot of students probably will not take it seriously or will quickly lose their motivation to participate. There is no clear cut answer as to how to fix their problem, but I think school administrators have to realize that school can not function the same way it once did when the platform by which students now have to receive their education is completely different. I think a lot of teachers have realized this by now, and like Jennifer mentioned, are probably much better prepared now than they were a few months ago. It’s hard to incentivize students to complete online work when oftentimes motivation to perform well in in-person classrooms is pretty low. I found online school to be okay at first, but like most others, quickly lost my enthusiasm to continue to work hard. I’d like to return back to school, but definitely not given the current state of the pandemic. If we do not return back to school in the fall, hopefully teachers and students will be understanding of each other and their shared unfamiliarity with online school.

  3. Like what Mia said, it requires a good amount of discipline something that others don't have. I already know I might struggle a bit because i'm not in a classroom and I function almost like a switch. Once I'm in the classroom, I know its time to learn. When I'm at home, I work on homework and relax. Online school is something I have to get comfortable with because online school is still new to me as well as others.

  4. To state my side first, I don't take online school seriously, and I consider myself a pretty average, high school kid when it comes to everyday living. Considering that idea, this implies that maybe the majority of students don't take online school seriously. For me, this whatsoever does not involve my discipline as a student. This is a wager of the fact that I don't prioritize schooling. I prioritize education, but schooling has always been a backseat toddler. Now that i don't have to go to school, education is easy for me to access, but I never said high school education. I finally get the chance to escape being jailed by the government now that I don't have to go to school which is also why I prefer Advanced classes in school; Teachers tend to cut the sugar and give you reality as well as letting a student speak their mind. Now on the other hand are students who do have discipline issues. Are the students who already stay complacent with their C negative grounding point going to take online schooling well. It's like giving a nitwit freedom with no restraints and expecting mighty results. The answer is no. The students just don't care. Now we have the super high, above average students. Their probably so burnt out that they will not think a second about saying bye to school. That or their egos are huge and think they know enough already. That students that actually take online schooling seriously are the ones desperate for better grades. Students between a c and b grade level will fight so hard for a gradde raise which is very impressive. To come to a conclusion, however, the majority couldn't care enough about online schooling unless it's kill or change something.
