Are we potentially putting newspaper companies out of business?

When reading Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business, Postman claims, "I will try to demonstrate that as typography moves to the periphery of our culture and television takes its place at the center, the seriousness, clarity and, above all, value of public discourse dangerously declines" (29). What came up to mind was that our generation depends on television or the internet as our primary source of news. What about newspaper companies that print news right off the press such as the New York Times? Buying a printed version of the news is a great way newspaper companies make money, but with the introduction of new technologies are we taking that money away? The New York Times does have a website where we can view their media, but they will need to implement advertisements in their articles to make money. Also, with the presence of campaigns to use less paper and save more trees, this could push more people to depend on articles from the internet as a source of news. With my closing question, do you believe our generation will be the cause of putting these companies out of business?

  1. It’s very likely that many newspaper companies in the U.S. will become insolvent in future years. The emergence of television has definitely contributed to the decline, but a bigger contributor was the arrival of the internet. Both of these relatively new technologies bring news to consumers quicker and in a more visually pleasing style, whereas newspapers are forced to conform to their physical format and their physical manufacturing and distribution. Competing mediums also offer moving images and sound, and the internet search function allows readers to select their preferences. All of these aspects give online mediums a distinct advantage over limited print features, as it appeals more to a culture based on entertainment and imagery. Not only that, but online mediums aren’t burdened with expensive union contracts, printing presses, and delivery fleets.

  2. Yes, I also believe that the internet will put these newspaper companies out of business. We may not know when it'll happen exactly, but it will happen. The internet is now a big part of life for our generation and for the upcoming generation. Almost everything is being done with the internet and technology and reading the news online is also another thing starting to be taken over by it as well. Although many people think it's a bad thing, but it is also a good thing too. With less paper that means not as many trees are being cut down and destroyed, which is a really good change for the environment. In the future, I think things will be okay with no more newspaper companies.
