Peek-a- Wait... What?

After reading Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman the chapter that stuck with me was “The Peek-a-Boo World.” In this chapter Postman unravels the idea that we live in a world where we see one thing that encapsulates us, then, seconds later something else catches our attention. This world allows impactful ideas to completely disappear. In the typography age information would take days to months to be known, but with technology we are able to be informed in the matter of seconds. Throughout this time where we are dealing with many crucial problems, this can be overwhelming. There are many issues in our country and many others that we are being distracted from and oblivious to. It is extremely hard to continue fighting and staying aware of everything of the problems in our society but this is critical to make change.  Multiple people keep getting distracted and allowing this “Peek-a-World” to take over but we need to continue fighting for what’s right.

I believe that social media plays a big role in why the “Peek-a-Boo” role is becoming reality. Teenagers are on some type of social media platform a majority of their day for entertainment as well as a source for information. On Instagram, we can see a post about the Black Lives Matter movement then scroll up and see a post of multiple people hanging out. These types of platforms where anything can be posted, seen, and then forgotten in the span of ten seconds encourages these types of societies in becoming reality. Do you think social media is a good source for information? Has this “Peek-a-Boo” world already become reality? How do we stop it? Are you actively keeping up with the BLM movement, elections, and the coronavirus?
