What is Your Opinion on The News?
I have just finished chapter 7 of "Amusing Ourselves to Death" and what Neil Postman is saying in each chapter is the truth. All of television is only for entertainment purposes and any serious discussion is viewed by the people as boring. Each news story on any news show lasts maximum around a couple minutes, other wise the audience will start to be bored or remain pensive on that one story and not pay attention to the next story. I personally don't watch the news because most stories are negative and usually are about someone dying or multiple people dying. Also I don't watch it because the other stories are all about some celebrities breaking up or some other drama happening with celebrities. I know that watching the news is beneficial because it at least informs you of what is happening with the world or around our neighborhood, nevertheless I still don't watch it because the stories they share put me in a mindset that this world will never improve and then I just have negative feelings for the rest of the day. How do you feel about the news? Does it affect your mood in anyway? Do you even watch it?

I don't bother with watching the news because if something actually important happens, I'll hear it from someone else. I know that the news shows a lot of things that could be viewed as negative, but they show those because that is what people watch the most. It sounds messed up but that is what gets them views. Other stories covering things like politics are even worse. All they do is spread misinformation because it's what the politicians want you to hear. Why is the news even affiliated with the left and right, the point of the news should be truth, not the truth you want. It's dangerous how dysfunctional our news is. They do almost nothing to help the current political divide, but instead worsen it. That's why I think the news isn't worth watching
ReplyDeleteI don't bother with actually watching the news because news today is just trying too hard to keep viewers interested and it doesn't care about major stories that are going on today. When something major happens the news clings on to that story for weeks and it barely presents new information of that story every time it is presented. The news is starting to become so disconnected from its viewers that many stories won't even have a single impact on the viewers. News is just a joke at this point and I don't bother with watching it.
ReplyDeleteMany news outlets, especially televised news, are extremely biased and attempt to galvanize their audience, often giving exaggerated and altered accounts on events based on opinions and ambiguous details. It can wrongly influence people who follow blindly and can be detrimental to their mental health as it generally incites fear, anger, despondency and all sorts of other negative emotions. It’s frustrating to learn about disastrous situations and have practically no way or influence to help. However, it is important to stay informed. People should receive information from different, more local sources instead of watching large news companies that profit from “breaking news” and covering the same subject for an unnecessary extended period of time.
ReplyDeleteChapter 7 has helped realize new things about the news I've never thought about. The news tends to be very opinionated in which in my opinion doesn't mix well with trying to inform; they'll spoon feed every individual nit pick they choose to sway others into their political agenda. I now take note on how the news always communicates very serious topics through form of entertainment. They jump from story to story and leave a temporary impression where they should give more attention to serious topics without making things dramatic.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to watching the new I never pay attention to it unless my parents ask me too. All they care about is the views and keeping people entertained. They also look at the bad things and never show people the good. Lastly, the news never really gives you the truth and that is why I never or rarely watch the news.
