Should ICE be abolished?

While there is a lot of focus surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement, the Abolish ICE movement has been getting more awareness. This movement was arranged in 2018 after the Trump administration ordered a family separation policy. Ever since then, a political movement started and proposed the abolition of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The talk on abolishing ICE has been an ongoing discussion for a couple of years, and there have not been positive changes made. Abolishing ICE would mean clearing the path to citizenship and keeping families together, as they should. The movement is not to completely get rid of ICE forever, but it is to start fresh and build something that would work. On the other hand, people do not see any problem in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. People think that ICE are the ones who are risking their lives by carrying out their mandate.
I believe ICE should be abolished. There are too many stories about how wrong ICE is treating the people, including many deaths in these detention facilities. Especially now with a pandemic going around, they need to be doing more. Keeping families separated is not right, and they should not be able to do that. Taking this all into consideration what do you guys believe? Should ICE be abolished, or is ICE doing good? What changes should be made?

  1. I see both arguments, honestly, and I don't lean to one side or another. I believe that it is important to have a strong, secure border and to be strict about people coming in illegally. People who come in illegally make it so that it is unfair to the people that waited to immigrate here legally. Plus, there is always a risk of criminals coming in without anyone knowing (I'm not saying that every person that comes in illegally is a criminal because that it definitely not true. Most are just looking for a better life).

However the way that ICE is dealing with undocumented immigrants is simply inhumane. Ripping families apart and placing them into detention camps where they are malnourished. It's not right at all.

What needs to be done primarily is to fix our flawed immigration system. People have to wait for years in order to be granted citizenship. It's way too unnecessarily long and strenuous when it should be simple. Many people don't have time to wait that long. It's urgent for many.

Maybe what also needs to be done after creating a strong border and a refined immigration system is to convert the undocumented immigrants already living here into official citizens (with proper background checks of course). An immigration system that is safe, fast, and sustainable is what is key.

  2. In my opinion, ICE isn't doing what it is meant to do and it's taken power to an extreme. To put it is very few words, ICE should be abolished because the approach they are taking is very inhumane and unacceptable. NOBODY deserves the treatment that immigrants are receiving. What ICE should be doing is simply regulating who comes in, rather than ripping apart families and treating them with such disrespect. All in all, what is meant to be done is not being done, so I say that ICE should either be abolished or changed completely.

  3. Hey Cindy <3
I certainly agree that ICE should be abolished. They deal with immigration in inhumane ways like separating families. Not to mention, about 3000 children have gone missing in these ICE detention camps. Over 1,200 cases of sexual assault have also been reported. Also, the immigrants coming into our country don't steal jobs but rather do the jobs most people don't want to do. ICE has caused a huge amount of harm to immigrants as well as created a culture of fear for legal Hispanic citizens. Abolish ICE and figure out a different way to handle immigration because these are people and children, not criminals.
