Should College Be Free?

For a couple of years, Politicians discussed if college should be free. Each part was divided and the Democrats debated over how much the cost of colleges should be eased down for higher education. For example in Tennessee and California, they are offering free community college tuition towards all high school graduates and the board of overseers in the University of Harvard wants to end undergraduate tuition. In the "Room for Debate" issue Should College Be Free?, most debaters agreed that instead of making college "free" they should lower tuition. Sara Goldrick-Rab, a debater, stated if college and universities lowered prices for students they can focus more on learning and completing their degree faster rather than working. In my opinion, If colleges were to become "free" middle and upper-income students will take most of the free public spots and that will hurt the low-income students. I agree that public colleges shouldn't be entirely free but they should lower prices on tuition to an affordable price for low-income students, except for ivy leagues and private colleges.
Low-income students are mainly targeted by college and universities because they know they can't do much. Most politicians continue to think the way to make college more affordable is to target financial aid to students that have a lower-income. Usually when students graduate from high school they go to a "free" community college and transfer to a university. This is a good plan for students who can't afford to go to a university right away. It will help students save money and can also teach them how to enter adulthood. Also, there's nothing wrong with going to a university right away because that's the most common decision.
All in all, the only thing that matters to colleges and universities is money. They favor students who are able to afford certain things, but it's not entirely fair because every student should have the opportunity to go into a college and university to seek higher education. Going back to the question, should college be free? if so, why? and if you would like to share, what are your college/university plans?
