Are digital connections good or bad?

While reading a Room for Debate article titled "Is Digital Connectedness Good or Bad for People", the debaters Emerson Csorba and Noa Gafni Stanley go back and forth between reasons arguing between the good and bad effects of digital connections. Csorba is against having digital connections as he argues that our connections on social media are causing negative effects on our mental health as we are now focusing on being the center of attention where we have to get the most likes and look the best in pictures which causes ourselves to constantly put ourselves down because we don't look a certain way or we don't have something that others have. Stanley argues in favor of digital connections as it brings people closer together, she argues that we can create meaningful connections digitally whether it is through online dating sites or even chat rooms we join, and that these connections we make can be as meaningful as non digital connections.
In today's climate it seems that the only type of connections we can have are digital ones as we are encouraged to stay home and stay away from others. Personally, I believe that digital connections are good for everyone because right now my digital connections with my friends has made this quarantine bearable and I have strengthened many of my connections through texting and taking online. Everyone has their own experiences with digital connections whether they are good or bad but in the end it all comes down to how we perceive our own digital connections and how impactful they our in our lives.

  1. Hello, jctb5. I believe that digital connections are good, but some people are using it the wrong way. They are so focused on who looks the DRIPPIEST in photos to get the most likes, or who has the best FIT. I sometimes post, but i really don't care about any of that. I usually use them for communicating with friends. Although we are disconnected right now, we can still communicate over texting or talking in the party chat

  2. I agree with Bailey that digital connections are good, but only so long as we aren't abusing them and using them the wrong way. Personally my cousins live thousands of miles away from where I do, so digital connections are the only way we can talk to them and stay updated on each other's very busy lives. In addition, I haven't hung out with any of my friends from school since quarantine because their parents don't feel comfortable with them socializing with people yet. I agree with Daniel that I wouldn't have been able to get through this quarantine the way I have without digital connections to them.

  3. I agree with both of you guys that digital connection is good. Honestly without digital connection I probably wouldn’t be able to last quarantine. This is the only way I can keep in touch with friends and family. It has also helped me make new friends who I talk to everyday. Without them quarantine would be super boring. It is one of the things I look forward to when I wake up.
