Disney World Reopens! Blessing or Curse?

Disney World is planning to reopen amidst the corona virus and its increasing numbers.  With new safety protocols and regulations, Disney CEO Bob Chapek reassures that the magical and family friendly environment can be safe for the public.   Mandatory rules such as wearing masks at all times and having a max capacity at the park ensures a healthier place for people to enjoy their time at the most magical place on earth.  Especially with how the Shanghai location benefited from its reopening, the company is allowing its Florida park to open up.  However, with the increasing cases of the virus is it safe to reopen?  Even with all these new guidelines to follow will the hundreds of people attending be safe?  Is it worth the risk to reopen?  One of the main benefits of keeping the parks closed was that there is no risk of Covid spreading.  But, this kept many employees out of work and the overall business struggled with its prized bread winner closed to all.  Disney World alone makes 16% of the company's total revenue ($11.2 billion).  So I end with this.  Since Disney World is planning on reopening, what is your view on the situation and how will this effect our current state of panic and stress?  What do you believe to be the possible outcome?

  1. Personally I love Disney, I think people view Disney as an outlet for things that they are going through within their lives and it’s a staple for them. As much as I’d love any Disney park to reopen there are more important issues that need to be addressed rather than a theme park reopening. Since the rates of Covid-19 cases are rising exponentially I don’t think this is the time for a theme park as loved like Disney World to reopen. Although they did enforce new rules to maintain social distancing, this is only a precaution and not a guarantee that you won’t get infected with the virus while being at the park. Despite these new guidelines I don’t believe it is worth the risk to reopen, even though it puts many employees out of work. I like to think because all theme parks closed at the beginning of the CoronaVirus outbreak, it saved many lives from being infected. Therefore now if parks were to reopen especially with the rise of cases in the United States, it would create more of an issue for those working in the medical field, who are putting their lives in danger everyday to save those infected with Covid-19. I feel very strongly about this topic not only because I don’t want others to be infected. But also because my mother works in the medical field and has told me herself that most days she is afraid of going to work because she is working with patients who are infected with Covid-19, and don’t want to expose her children and herself to it. I know those who do want to enjoy the parks as soon as they reopen aren’t going with bad intentions for others, but you also have to look at the bigger picture and what is gonna be more beneficial to yourself those around you. I’d rather enjoy Disney knowing that I’m not putting others and myself at a risk of getting this virus.

  2. Hi Esther! In response to your questions, I believe Disney would make a huge mistake by opening up the parks so early. Cases are still increasing rapidly in the United States and it’s not smart opening up such a popular attraction to the public. Yes, there will be a cut in attendance, along with sanitary measures and enforcing visitors to wear masks. But, is it really worth risking the health of your family members and those around you just to experience the Happiest Place in the World? Masks, social distancing, and disinfectants decrease the chances of transmitting the virus, but there might still be a chance; you never know. Personally, I’ve been meaning to go to Disney since June, but it would be incredibly selfish to others if I go out just for a good time. I believe it’s a safer bet if everyone just stays home for now and limits social interactions as much as possible. Disney should reopen when a successful treatment or vaccine is found, which may take awhile, but it’s for the best for everyone.

    1. Hi Emma!! I totally agree with your point of view. Even though i am desperately in need for a Disneyland trip, I do not think they should open! (pretty much what the comments are saying lol). But I also believe that not going helps promote safety and an example of what people should actually be doing. Which is staying home to keep not only themselves safe but the others around them. I also believe that Disney should reopen when cases are close to zero or when there is a cure to this madness. It is for the greater good and in all honestly this reopening could totally backfire. But let's hope things go well. Highly doubt they will...it is 2020 after all.

  3. Disney World is a multi-billion-dollar company that owns a variety of other companies that makes accumulates more wealth for their industry every day including ESPN and ABC. In my opinion, I love going to Disneyland, watching Disney movies, however, that does not mean that I would risk the spread of a virus in which cases are going up rapidly right now. I do not see why Disney World would need to open during this time, unlike many other vulnerable small businesses that are suffering at the moment in the face of a second worldwide closure. Even with its vast size, guests wearing masks, and the park following CDC guidelines that will not stop the silent spread of the virus, especially to those who are most vulnerable such as young children and the elderly. I see the opening as a way for Disney World to make more money off of guests, especially with their already overpriced tickets, as people are bored from being stuck in their homes. I do not understand why it is needed to open up the park, that doesn't seem to be suffering at the moment. Why risk a further spread of the virus, which is taking the lives of too many.

  4. I agree with everyone else as well that Disney World should not reopen. With casinos, bars, gyms, and places like these, cases have begun to spike again. It still isn't safe to be around and in large crowds and such. Disney could be making a huge mistake, and endangering many people's lives with their decision to reopen.
