Does Misogyny Still Exist?

Admissions to same-sex colleges are increasingly dropping, which has led to widespread closures of most all male/all female schools. A “Room for Debate” article, “Are Same-Sex Colleges Still Relevant?”, addresses the closure of an all girls college and what it means for the remaining single sex colleges.

In this modern day and age, there is less of a need for same sex colleges; women who want the same opportunities that men have, choose to equally learn in the same environment as them. An alumni from Sweet Briar university, an all girls school, argues that,  “As long as misogyny and violence against women exist in our society, open environments like women's colleges remain relevant”. However, women have been thriving in co-ed schools with little misogyny, and have also had more experience dealing with the gender integrated world than those studying privately. All female colleges were only relevant at a time when females were thought to think and learn differently than males, a time when “female leaders were educated in an era when elite (male) colleges did not admit them” stated by Diane Halpern, former president of the American Psychological Association. Segregating the two genders prohibits men and women from learning from each other and working together, and also promotes voluntary separation between man and woman. As I see it, female colleges are outdated and don’t have the same resources as elite co-ed colleges, which is why so many are shutting down.

Do you believe that same-sex colleges should be preserved or should run it’s course? Do you think co-ed schooling, both in high school and college, is a better learning experience and why? Would you consider attending an all male or all female school?

  1. When it comes to sensitive topics like misogyny, racism, and sexism, those things will never really go away in today's society and world. To be honest I do not mind if same-sex colleges still exist and provide educational means. Would I ever attend one? Ha. No. Never. However, I do believe that co-ed schools are much better for learning experiences and preparing people for the future. Attending schools with both boys and girls helps both genders figure out how to handle each other and respect one another for their beliefs and differences. I assume with same-sex schools that there can be socially awkward experiences due to not being fully in touch with reality. Co-ed are more beneficial to the many students because it has a more accurate idea of how life is. It is not just going to be all girls or all boys once you leave high school or college. It will be a diverse society of all people and identifications and I believe that co-ed can help those get in touch with how the world truly is chaotic yet fun.

  2. Even if more people are not attending same-sex colleges and instead go to an all gender school, I don't believe that the amount of misogyny will be decreased. The definition of misogyny is "dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women". With this information it can be understood that even if more women are moving to an all gender school they can and will still suffer from the effects of misogyny. Their risk of being harassed by males would be even higher. I don't believe the answer to the problem would be dividing males and females, but instead teaching males what is right and wrong.
