In Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business, Postman begins the first chapter talking about focal points in America that are, "radiating American spirit"(1 Postman). Cities like Chicago, New York, Boston, and Las Vegas have been focal points being centers of major shifts in the U.S. Postman also includes symbols that could be used to represent the focal point. Postman provided his opinion of what statues or symbols should be in the cities if not already there. This inspired me to question what focal points could be used today?
I believe these focal points can provide a look into the past and can be used to see the change of the U.S. What would the focal point be of today and why? Will it change soon? What symbol would be appropriate for the focal point?
