School Assignments: Type or Write?

When reading Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business, the novel consistently revolves around a technology-based generation. With California surpassing New York in COVID-19 cases, schools are presumably approaching online school for the fall semester. In the past few school years, teachers have provided a few assignments that require to be typed. However, most assignments were based on writing, rather than typed. There are many benefits and downsides to assignments being typed and written, as a typed assignment allows for the teacher to test for plagiarism. Some students are able to quickly finish their assignments if they possess the skill of typing swiftly. The downfall to typed assignments is it may take more time to finish if typing is not a strong skill they possess. On the other hand, most teachers provide more feedback on written assignments, allowing students to quickly realize their mistakes. Unfortunately, it is difficult for teachers to recognize plagiarism on a written assignment, providing students more opportunities to cheat. Overall, it depends on a student's writing or typing speed and efficiency to finish an assignment.

Ultimately, do you prefer assignments typed or written? Do you think teachers should start requiring students to type their assignments or write them?

  1. I have gained more of an interest in typing rather than writing when it comes to assignments. However, I usually write down my answers first because switching between tabs, forgetting what I was going to type, and then switching tabs again I find annoying. With school having to be online this upcoming semester, they really have little to no choice on assigning written or typed work. There are so many pros and cons to both options, making it hard to fully choose one, but with how school is moving, it looks as if everyone is going to have to lean towards typing. It is scary to think that maybe in the far future writing will be very scarce, making typing the norm.

  2. Whatever is cool with the teacher, I will do it. However, my preference would be to type up assignments for the following reasons. I believe typing to be much more efficient for me. I get things done faster and seem to be less distracted when I use a computer. Plagiarism can be caught when we turn in online projects/homework, and with this upcoming semester and the plan to go virtual, I think it would be most convenient for teachers and students alike. Feedback can be given with platforms like Turnitin and google classroom. We also social distance and can keep each other safe by not having to turn in printed copies of homework. I think with typed out assignments and online homework, we will be able to get back into the classroom once more.

  3. I prefer assignments typed because not only am I better at typing than writing but also because I am less hesitant to make a mistake typing because I can delete mistakes more easily which allows me to be more efficient when doing the assignment. I also like the idea of typing assignments because there are spelling tools that can help prevent grammar or spelling errors. Typing assignments will reduce the amount of trees being cut down for paper. I think that teachers should start requiring students to type their assignments because they also benefit from catching plagiarism. Also, the due dates on the assignment they assign will remind the student for example, google classroom.

  4. I feel like there should be a mix of typed and written assignments. A variety of both would be good because the students that prefer typed assignments get an equal amount of favored assignments as the students that prefer written assignments. An equal balance of both would be beneficial because it will help students improve their penmanship and writing skills, while also helping students improve their typing skills.

  5. I have preferred typing than writing over the years especially through high school. In high school, they have been giving us more essays and projects. With access to a computer and being able to type, its easier to correct misspelled words and grammar corrections. In addition, typing is useful when it comes to how neat it is. I feel like its difficult for teachers to read some papers due to how different everyone's hand writing is. Nevertheless, I agree with your statement about how when it comes to typing papers, students could be easily caught for plagiarism since we have access to cites like turnitin. Overall, based on my opinion, I think typing is better due to how it is beneficial for students and that we could save paper through it.

  6. I would rather type than write. I know that my hand writing is ultimately illegible unless I take hours to write everything. Typing can help me express ideas faster and it's easier to read than handwriting. Teachers wouldn't have to worry about a student having sloppy handwriting and not being able to read an assignment. I know most teachers say that if they cannot read an assignment, they will mark it as a zero. There should also most likely be no excuse for late work since it can be sent within a few seconds if we disregard other circumstances.
