Should Guns Be Allowed On College Campuses?
While I was reading Room For Debate articles, I came across one titled “Should Guns Be Permitted On College Campuses?” Personally, I don’t believe that guns should be allowed near any school campuses at all. The only ones that are allowed to be armed with weapons of any kind are the authorities. As of right now, there are 10 states that allow concealed weapons on their college campuses. I understand that people need weapons for self-defense but I believe that the risks heavily outweigh the benefits of being able to carry a concealed weapon on a college campus. It’s nearly impossible to have everyone on a college campus to abide by the rules that colleges will enforce once allowed. There’s usually going to be at least one “class clown” that thinks it’s funny to mess around with his or her weapons which can lead to accidents. Or let’s say someone’s dealing with personal issues in their life and their mind is just overwhelmed with stress and they need something to take out that stress on. There’s a slight chance that he/she can start a school shooting. The chances are very low but it isn’t 0. Of course, some top tier colleges have more trustworthy people which lowers the risks of a catastrophe occurring but everyone’s lives are in constant danger. In the end, I believe that the risks heavily outweigh the benefits of being able to carry a weapon on any school campus.

This article makes a very valid argument having guns on campus puts students in a very dangerous position. Allowing guns on campus would make it very easy for a school shooter to come in to campus. Even though there is the argument that guns can be used to save someone from a school shooter we wouldn't even need guns to protect someone if we didn't have guns to attack someone.
ReplyDeleteI agree that although students having guns can help lower the amount of injured or casualties, there is just too much of a risk that even more school shootings will happen. Just like you said Chris, there will always be that one guy who thinks it will be funny to play with his or her gun and then end up injuring or even worse killing a fellow student. There are just too many risks and dangers that completely outweigh the defensive reasons for students to carry guns.
