I have recently watched the news and with COVID-19 getting worse, something they constantly bring up is school. Parents have different opinions on this situation, especially those with young children.
Some argue that schools should not reopen and that their kids attendance should not be mandatory. They go on and say that even if the education is not as great, when at home, students remain safer. Plus, parents say children do not know how to stay away from each other and it will just be difficult for them in general.
On the other hand, others argue that schools should reopen because it is better for education and kids learn better. With that said, what do you think? Should we risk our health to attend school ? As much as I dislike online learning, I think that, as of now, I would prefer that than being exposed to people that I do not know where and who they have been around.
Plus, even if we take all the measures necessary like staying six feet apart and wearing face masks at all times, that is only a way to prevent it, not guaranteeing us full safety. I also think it's difficult for young children to stay in one place and be as cautious as us, the older ones. Then again, the older ones, which are us, may start hanging out with more people because some may think they are excluded from the rules. Not only this, but I also think it would not be safe anyway. Our restrooms, even before all this, were unsanitary and had missing soap.
Therefore, should schools reopen for certain grades? Would you rather attend school physically or virtually? I know we all have an opinion that we think is best for us and I would like to know what you guys suggest is the best thing to do, or what you prefer is best.
I would believe that the vast majority of students would prefer to go to school physically. We have all been in quarantine for many months; we are yearning for physical interaction. However, we cannot place our pleasure above the well being of society. The COVID-19 virus is running rampant in the United States. We have been unable to reduce our cases. As you said, Jennifer, current public schools struggle to provide soap within restrooms. It is not plausible that public schools and institutions will be able to uphold the safety recommendations set by medical professionals. Moreover, the inadequate leader that is our president has not been helping matters. He has threatened to cut funding from schools and institutions that do not have physical classes.
ReplyDeleteSome are arguing to reopen schools. Even leaders—whose ability to make educated decisions is questionable—are advocating for reopening schools next month. They claim that children are not likely to die from the COVID-19 virus. This claim is supported by evidence, but those who use it fail to look one step ahead. There are around 74.1 million children under the age of eighteen in the United States. Children will disobey many of the guidelines set by health organizations. These children will then be asymptomatic carriers of the virus. Children, as it seems many have forgotten, live with adults. They will pass the virus onto their adult parents. Their parents will then commute to work and public areas. Parents will spread the virus to others. Soon, the United States will have more cases than can be treated. Hospitals will reach capacity. With limited resources, health professionals will have to decide who lives and who dies.
Few want to continue virtual learning. Virtual education has been a hindrance to learning for some students. Everyone wants to reopen and resume life, but that cannot be done. We cannot place things above human lives. It is only someone alive that can experience the world.
I think schools should be able to reopen mid-Fall. As long as students wear masks or facial coverings and wash or sanitize their hands, school will be fine for reopening. There are always going to be risks, however, the schools should take extra caution and be extra careful when planning out each semester. Doing things like sanitizing classrooms and cleaning the desks between periods is a great way of making sure germs aren't spreading. For the students who want to be extra safe, they can bring their own sanitizing wipes to wipe down the desks before they use them and they can bring their own personal hand sanitizer. If school were to reopen, there would have to be lots of rules about not sharing things or being too close to other students. If school reopened, I would hope it would be mandatory for students to get their temperature checked and to get asked if they have experienced any symptoms or been in contact with anyone who has experienced symptoms.
