During this time of political unrest, many interesting threats have been made. Tiktok, the popular social media app, has caught the attention of the media more and more every day. To provide context, Gen Z (Generation Z), has been using the site to bully and scheme against the president, Donald Trump. Some of the pranks that have been pulled include: ruining a rally in Tulsa, OK, causing millions of lost sales on his merchandise website, and plummeting the ratings of his campaign app. As someone who has taken part in these pranks, I find them absolutely hilarious. These acts annoy someone who I personally find to be racist, sexist, and honestly kind of evil. And while others may not feel that way, as a person of color in this country it is so clear. Although Gen z takes pleasure in this, the Trump Administration does not.
Donald Trump and Mike Pompeo have claimed their reasons for banning the app are purely for security. Due to the app’s Chinese origins, they think that the personal information of its users is at stake and that the Chinese government cannot be trusted. Pompeo claims using the site is, “private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party,”. These reasons don’t really make any sense, as lots of apps are Chinese based or have ties to the Chinese government. Banning TikTok in the US really seems like it’s because the president is tired of being embarrassed and annoyed that teenagers can ruin his campaign plans. I think that having platforms for America’s youth to speak their mind’s on is important. In my eyes, Tiktok should not be banned because if Trump can’t handle a couple of pranks maybe he’s not fit to be president again or hear criticism from educated individuals. Is this really a danger to our security? Or is it just a threat out of pettiness? Should TikTok be banned for either of these reasons?
Hi Amia, personally I feel like Donald trump is trying to ban tik tok for several reasons. It's not because China will use your personal information but instead of the awareness and "chaos" Gen Z is making. Mainly it's probably because of the prank they pulled for his rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It seems like he doesn't want to be seen as a public humiliation. It's a country of freedom and speech and if Trump does not like it, he's only going to be seen as him making a tantrum. Tik tok is a place where people find humor, news, and all sorts of things, it shouldn't be taken down.
ReplyDeleteTikTok should not be banned. The reasons provided do not make sense. As you said, other social media applications are from China. None of these applications are under attack. Also, Facebook gave Chinese industries, even ones with strong ties to the Chinese government, access to user information. All this is said, and TikTok is still under fire. Threats made against TikTok are for one reason: it is a hub for anti-Trump content. Members of Generation Z were born with cell phones in their hands. The Tulsa fiasco demonstrated the undeniable power of Generation Z. Tiktok has been the medium used to organize attacks against Trump. These attacks are hurting the thing the President holds dearest: his ego. Moreover, these attacks can cause Trump to lose the presidential election. 2016 proved the influence social media platforms had over elections. Now, Trump is looking for ways to guarantee reelection and stop younger people from making fun of him. The term "Bunker [Expletive]" did not come from nowhere.
ReplyDeleteI agree that TikTok should not be banned. If the U.S. wants to ban it since it goes against Trump’s desires, they should not be able to. I also doubt that the government could if they wanted to. It is the first amendment, and that amendment, no matter how old should be honored. Like Amia said, it is good to have a place where youth can express their opinion on our country. Also, even if TikTok is stealing personal data for China, many apps do that. Let’s be real here. Privacy is long gone. I also believe that a person has the right to take that risk. Platforms like TikTok allow people to express their opinion on a variety of subjects and problems. If we start banning these platforms, we start to infringe on peoples’ freedom of speech which will have very bad effects on the nation.
