Social Media; the Quiet Ruler of our Entertainment Universe?

In chapter five, of Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death, he discusses the creation of our "peek-a-boo" society. How the introduction of the telegraph and photography in the turn of the nineteenth century diminished the once main discourse of typography. Replacing the impacting knowledge of the print with the soon to be irrelevant daily news. It created the need of useless knowledge that would not cause great impact in our daily lives, and qualitative content became less prioritized. It was the early steps of the modern age of media, of television and computers. Towards the end of the chapter Postmen declares that (at the time, which was the 1980's) television had become the center of epistemology. Television influenced and impacted almost everything in people's lives. The things they bought, ate, read, and wore. It had not become a part of the American culture, but perhaps the American culture. It directed "not only our knowledge of the world, but our knowledge of ways of knowing as well " (Postman 79). Yet, television was and is so natural then as it is today that nobody seems to notice the great gravitational pull it has on society. We don't marvel at the way the technology displays rainbows of lights and gives us endless entertainment. It has become a soft, familiar hum in the background of entertainment we are constantly searching for.
My question to you, or theory perhaps, is that social media has taken the place of television in our modern "peek-a-boo" society. Where knowledge is quickly learned and dumped just as quickly. Do you agree? Or does television still reign supreme? What do you think?

  1. I agree that when a new form of widespread technology is introduced to people, it does take the place of old technology. However, I would argue that although social media has become the most popular form of technology, TV has not been replaced completely because of its ability to evolve in our quick moving society. TV is a source of technology that is still watched daily and where many people become informed of news. Without the ability to evolve, technology can be replaced easily and lost in this modern society of constant change. This change is necessary because technology is imbedded in or daily lives and culture and helps our society improve upon many aspects of life.
