Texting While Driving

Meanwhile I was looking for a “Room for Debate”  topic and an article called “How to stop people from texting while driving” came up. As we all know driving while texting may cause an accident towards yourself and other people. While hearing your phone ring as a notification or call could be tempting, you’re putting yourself in the hands of death. Some journalists have certain ideas on how to stop this issue from continuing. While reading, this debater named Anjan Chatteree caught my attention because he said, “Using our ears and mouth rather than eyes and hands for brief communication would reduce distractions”. With your eyes on the road, a voice command installed to the phone or car would be more beneficial for less distractions. Sarah Doody, a journalist, commented, “One app, LifeSaver, attempts to block the temptation: Once installed on a mobile phone, it automatically locks the device in about three seconds after driving starts”. If people would start using this app, it could help reduce the use of electronics behind the wheel. In my opnion I feel the need to say if people just followed the rules just not answer back for a few moments, thousands of lives could be put out of danger. In people's eyes, there's no harm in looking away for a few seconds, but is it worth it? What would you do in order to make people stop using their phone while driving?

  1. To answer your question "what would you do in order to make people stop using their phone while driving", I will promote using apps like the LifeSaver app or activate
"do not disturb while driving" on any iPhone in settings (maybe in Android too) to my friends and family. Since I cannot 'make' anyone not look at their phone while driving, I can't do much to help people across the world I do not know, but I can start with the people I know. Using my knowledge of driving and how much attention driving needs, I would think most people already know how bad looking at your phone is, so we cannot stop them from making their own choice.

  2. To deter those from looking at their phone and texting while driving, the person first needs to exercise self control. Even if tools like applications such as Lifesaver can definitely play a huge part. That being said, the person still has to be disciplined enough to not pick up their phone while driving. Overall, if the person driving is aware of the dangers of texting while driving and is disciplined, than their likelihood of them getting into an accident is far less.

  3. With today’s society we are very attached to our phones and would put ourselves at risk just to answer a text or call. I think an app would be a smart idea since it keeps everything locked on your phone until you arrive to your destination. It’s sad that it would take most people an app to drive safer and not check their phone. We have become very reliant on our phones that it has created us to not be as disciplined with ourselves. So I agree that an app would be one of the best ways to make people stop using their phones while driving.

  4. When driving it is self explanatory to not go on your phone. Not only will it bring harm to the driver but it will bring harm to everyone else. I like the idea of having an app that automatically locks the device once you set foot in the car. There are also different ways you can block out calls and ringtones on your phone like putting it on silent or turning on do not disturb. Overall people should already know not to look at your phone while driving because it is a simple rule but some choose to against that.

  5. A lot of people don't understand that driving in a car can be as dangerous as having a fully armed weapon in your hands. Any type of distraction while driving especially a cell phone, can put dozens of people at risk. Your statement, "In people's eyes, there's no harm in looking away for a few seconds, but is it worth it," really resonated with me because I completely agree. The habit of looking a phones while driving is one that will be around for a long time, but with the help of apps like LiveSaver and ios updates with "do not disturb while driving" seriously makes a difference. It always amazes me how many people are willing to risk their own and multiple others' lives for a message or a call.

  6. As Cindy said, driving a car is equivalent to having a weapon. Any type of distraction while maneuvering such a large vehicle has very serious consequences that likely results in death. Before driving, the driver and passengers need to assure that there are no distractions or possible distractions in the car, including pets, people, car parts, and especially phones. It's up to the person to decide what kind of driver they will be. To prevent accidents, the person must ask them selves if checking their phone is worth risking human lives.

  7. It is sad of what our world has come to. I agree that an app or simply "don't disturb" would be a good idea to use while driving. Driving is a serious thing. It's not okay to be messing around with even one hand off the wheel, especially if one is just starting out like us. Answering a text or call can wait; the consequences are just not worth it.
