Are Fines Necessary For Not Wearing a Mask?

Ever since COVID-19 started and we entered quarantine, everyone has been forced to follow certain rules. For the sake of everyone's safety, masks and distance are necessary in order to keep germs from spreading to other people around us. Almost all stores and restaurants require face masks in order to enter the area. Although, most people do wear mask in public, some don't want to because it's "their body, their choice". Some adults think that the virus is just a joke and that God will protect them, but it's not like that. There have been many protest against masks for the same reason, "I wont be forced to wear it".
Since multiple states are having that issue of people not following the rules, now fines are being given. The amount of positive cases of the virus increase per day for the reason various individuals didn't cover up. In Michigan, the fine for not wearing a mask is up to five hundred dollars and in California it's around three hundred dollars. I personally do believe the fines being charged should continue because we need to decrease the amount of cases there are. Quarantine will last a long time if people don't start covering up and taking care of themselves. Do you agree that fines should continue or do you think there's other ways to stop people from not wearing masks?

  1. People who refuse to wear masks should be fined. If you have been on social media throughout this whole pandemic then you know who most these people who rebel against masks are. The reason people wear masks is to lower the chance of getting sick. There should be no reason why someone would be against staying healthy. Sadly, there are people like that in the world. The protests against masks and quarantine were very unintelligent. Not only did the protesters yell and get in the faces of the police they love so much, but they also poorly used the slogan "my body, my choice". This is very disrespectful towards the pro-choice movement. The same movement that most of the corona protesters are against. If they want to say that they have the choice over their own bodies then that should apply everywhere. When not wearing a mask not only are you putting your health in danger, but you are also risking the health of people around you. Hopefully, fining people would cause people to wear their mask.

  2. Hi Naraly! I agree with you; people should be fined for not wearing masks. A person should not be selfish and not wear a mask just because they don’t want to. Masks are highly effective in preventing the virus from entering a person’s body, therefore everyone should wear it. It’s important that citizens take extra precautions when going outside, since COVID19 is a tricky virus because symptoms don’t show until after 2-14 days of contact. If a person doesn’t know they have coronavirus and interacts with other people, the virus spreads more and more unknowingly. But, if the person with coronavirus does wear a mask, chances of transmitting the virus to other people decreases significantly, eventually leading to a decrease in cases over time. In another case, let’s say a person has breathing problems, and is unable to wear a mask when going out, then they shouldn’t be going outside in the first place. They shouldn’t go out without a mask and put others at risk because of their personal problems. Instead, they should stay home and send out a trusted and healthy family member to get their needed items. In conclusion, yes, people should be fined for not wearing a mask because they shouldn’t be conceded, and because masks save lives.

  3. Hey Naraly! I agree, people should be fined for not wearing masks. The fact is, while you may not be sick or not be affected, someone else who is at risk can. Not wearing a mask increses the liklihood of becoming infected with COVID-19. Some people are also asymptomatic, meaning that even though they don't show symptoms, they carry the COVID-19 virus. Because they don't show symptoms these symptomatic people think they're healthy and go on to infect others. Not wearing a mask is selfish and people should be punished for actions that can cause harm to others. Even if you can't personally be affected, lots of others can and it's apparent in the 128k that have died from the virus in the US alone.

  4. I agree with your opinion, people who go without wearing masks should be fined. People need to put the lives of others into consideration, there are many people with health issues, making them become more at risk of contracting the virus. A lot of people are money sensitive so I think placing a fine on those who don't wear masks is the best decision because no one wants to risk having to pay out of their pockets for something like that. If people don't wear masks while they're out in public this is just going to be a never-ending cycle.Everyone either needs to wear a mask to ensure their safety and the safety of others or stay home.

  5. I think people who refuse to wear masks should be fined. Wearing a mask is such a simple and easy concept to follow yet there are certain individuals who simply can't understand that. Those who wear masks are not only protecting themselves from germs, but are also protecting others. By wearing a mask you are being respectful to those around you and are helping prevent the spread of Covid-19. Those who chant “my body, my choice” referring to not wearing a mask, I believe are being very selfish and insensitive to those who have been infected with the virus or who have unfortunately died. Wearing a mask has been proven to not affect how individuals breathe, therefore shouldn’t be a problem about wearing one. So by fining those who aren’t wearing masks, I hope will change how they view this current issue and slow the spread of the virus during this pandemic.
