Do you see E-sports as a real sport?

Sports date all the way back since the beginning of time but now in the past decade, a new sport has emerged. Video games are a good part of people's lives. They play it here and there for fun or with their friends but now you can make money off of it. E-sports or electronic sports is all new to our lives but now it is growing fast and includes people making millions off of competing with others.
One game that was able to pull off the biggest prize pools (Dota 2 a MOBA type of game) gave out 36 million in one year. Which broke the world record for most money given in a tournament. More than half of that prize went to first place. Last year Fortnite came in a close second to most money given out. They had two tournaments, solos, and duos which the winners of both got 3 million dollars. What really shocked people in that tournament was that a 16-year-old won the solo tournament later receiving his 3 million. It's only the beginning of E-sports trying to make its break on the world because Intel was supposed to host its first annual tournament at the Olympics but now canceled due to Coronavirus.

What do think about e-sports being called a sport? Where do you see it in the next ten years?

  1. I do not think e-sports should be considered a real sport. Many definitions of the word sport include physical prowess and athleticism, gaming does not have either of these. Yes you have to be hand eye coordinated, a quick thinker, and have fine motor skills, but that’s not really being athletic. It could be considered a sport because of the fact that e-sports includes tournaments and other events, like for example football, but I think the comparison stops there. They are just events but they do not go on to being a sport. If gaming is considered a sport, then I think marching band should be considered a sport, because it meets the requirements better than e-sports, but many people are not ready to face that fact. Another reason is that it is based on electronics. There are electronic aspects of sports, for example communication devices, but they do not completely revolve around electronics like gaming does. Whether or not it is a sport though, I think it will continue to be a huge and very popular event for a long time. It has become a big part of our culture, whether you like it or not, and will probably stick with us like sports have … but it’s not a sport.

  2. I have to agree with Kevin. I don't agree that E-Sports is an actual sport.
Sport definition: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
With that said, I don't think it should be considered a sport. I love playing video games, but I just don't think it should be considered a sport. The definition says it should involve physical exertion. A lot of video games don't involve a lot of physical exertion. They can involve stress and a little bit of sweating if you're trying really hard in a game, but it doesn't really get you moving. To me, E-Sports is all that it will be, and electronic sport instead of a physical sport.
