Using social media, people have created and popularized movements such as "Black Lives Matter". Without a place to share stories and videos, injustices may not be taken seriously. Things like police brutality have been happening for decades, but now a new call to action has taken place due to videos and stories on social media. If we had no place to share news like this we would be forced to get our news from the biased and censored networks on television.
The users of social media have done many things, including talking about the errors in their own country. With a large enough following, users can get political attention that can cause new laws and changes. It is the same with attention from companies. For example, after years of protesting against the NFL team the "Washington Redskins" they are now finally changing their name and mascot as the current one is very disrespectful toward Native Americans. Using the power of social media, even the fate of the world is changing with the help of climate change activists.
I think this post brings up a very strong point, does social media have too much power? I think the simple answer is yes. There are many ways that people, especially those around our age have changed the world, just through social media. Just like you have stated, “Without a place to share stories and videos, injustices may not be taken seriously”. The Black Lives Matter movement in my opinion wouldn’t be as strong without social media. Social Media platforms like Instagram and Tik Tok have not only allowed this generation to grow awareness about this issue, but also helped this movement progress into what it is today. Although social media could be used with good or bad intentions, I think the difference it is making today is being used for the betterment of our future.
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question, "Does Social Media Have Too Much Power?" the answer is yes. In the past 5 months I've seen social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and etc change a lot but in a good way. On my instagram stories I've seen countless amount of posts about COVID-19 updates, the BLM movement and etc. I am not complaining about those posts because it helps me and other viewers understand what's going on around the world. All in all, social media is a very powerful platform and will be in better use in the future.
ReplyDeleteTo respond to the question at hand which is whether or not social media has too much power, I personally would say no, only because if we say "too much power", it makes it sound bad. However, I do think that social media does have a great amount of power and most people are using it for good reasons, like spreading awareness on topics that need to be heard and understood. For example, I have seen the BLM movement a lot recently, and I am glad I have, because I believe it is such an important topic that people should continue to be involved in for the betterment of the future.
