Have Christians Created a Harmful Atmosphere for Gays?

Have Christians created a harmful atmosphere for gays? My personal opinion is yes however not every Christian has made it harmful. To begin with, the LGBT community has only been around for 50 years whereas Christians have been around for many years. Throughout the 50 years, the LGBT community has done an exceptional job at having their voices be heard however they still have a lot to go through before they can be fully accepted by everyone. Christians who are against the community are usually referring to the bible verse Leviticus 18:22 which states “You are not to lie with a man as with a woman. That is detestable.” However, the bible also explains how you should “love thy neighbor” which completely goes against what the bible previously stated. The media portrays the religion as one that has a growing hate toward the LGBT community however I know many people who are Christian and love the community. Social media has made being a part of the LGBT community difficult due to what the bible says and how people believe that loving who you want to love is “disgusting” or “a disgrace to the human race.” Personally, I believe that there are so many Christians who support the LGBT community however the stories that are told are mainly focused on Christians who go against them completely. Do you believe that Christians have created a harmful atmosphere for gays or is the media over exaggerating how much hate the LGBT community is receiving?

  1. Hey Paige! In my opinion I do believe that Christians have made a harmful atmosphere towards the LGBTQ+ community, but also its not everyone. In many churches its known that "a woman is made for a man", but that has changed over several decades. Many adults grew up with the idea that being gay is a sin and that shouldn't be allowed, but as people now learn to see that the gays are no different than us there isn't a lot of hate as before. On some social media platforms, hate is also known towards them but others spread love and support to open the eyes of others. Some religious pages show how they do not hold a grudge against them. As time passes many Christians realize that no hate should be towards them. In the end I do see that there are some Christians who have hate in their hearts. but also many others believe they are also humans and should love who or whatever they want.

  2. From when Christianity was first born, they put their ideas inside their testament. The long-running issue of persecution against people within the LGBTQ+ community is clear. And I do not personally understand why anyone would condem someone for having feelings for another person, regardless of what gender they are. The Christians and Christainity as a whole has created a harmful atmosphere for people in the community especially from the beginning however, I believe it has changed a lot throughout the years, becoming more accepting every day. Although it has changed, that does not mean that everyone is still open. People everyday are still being judged by their sexuality, even by members of their own family. Even if it's just a small population that continues abide by their traditional views. Christainity daily is continuing its progress to create a community that everyone is accepted while still maintaining their faith, and I believe they will accomplish their task in a matter of years.
